What is CBGa?

If you’re on the journey to understanding cannabis and its many compounds, you can’t overlook CBGa—what is CBGa, and how can you use it?

Cannabigerolic acid, known as CBGa, is one of many compounds in the cannabinoid family of molecules found in cannabis. It’s considered a minor cannabinoid, and the “a” indicates that it’s an acid and is a precursor to other cannabinoids. While it’s a minor cannabinoid, it’s a crucial part of the cannabinoid reactions that produce other minor and major cannabinoids, including THCa, CBDa, and CBCa.

Understanding CBGa

CBGa, found more readily in younger cannabis plants, is extracted using a cold extraction or juicing process—if it’s heated under typical hemp extraction processes, it would convert to CBG. In its raw state, CBGa has the potential to have higher bioavailability and be absorbed by the body more readily.

> CBGa Benefits: CBGa interacts differently in the body than CBG and CBD. However, CBGa is non-intoxicating and does not produce a feeling of being high.

> CBGa Research: Most research conducted around CBGa revolves around its mechanism for converting CBGa into THCa. However, the benefits of CBGa show potential. While little research has been conducted about the medical impact of this minor cannabinoid, early studies in mice show it has potential anticonvulsant properties. Similarly, it may have potential impact on certain cardiovascular conditions, metabolic disorders, and colon cancer, but these early studies still lack significant research.

> CBGa + COVID-19: CBGa made headlines as researchers identified CBGa and CBDa as potentially blocking cellular entry of SARS-CoV-2. That does not translate into the ability for a cannabinoid to prevent or treat COVID-19 but does highlight the potential for more research into the far-reaching benefits of cannabinoids as therapeutic agents. As researchers indicated, hemp products have a long history of safe use in humans and oral bioavailability. The potential for plant-based healing products is great—and we couldn’t agree more.

How to Consume CBGa

Haygood Farms extracted CBGa and CBDa from hemp grown on our Sequatchie Valley farm to create an immune-boosting gummy, the Haygood Immune Support Gummies with CBDa + CBGa. We combined organic, cold-pressed CBGa and CBDa and combined them with essential vitamins and minerals that may help ward off or shorten colds, including zinc, vitamins C and D, and vitamins B6 and B12. Each serving contains 25mg of CBDa and 15mg of CBGa.

Get a pick-me-up from the mood- and energy-boosting B vitamins in these yummy gummies, flavored with pineapple, orange, and guava. Get the protective benefits of vitamin C and zinc to potentially lessen symptoms of the common cold and aid immunity.
