What Is CBG, and Why Does It Matter?

 

Cannabis blew up the internet recently when a study showed the potential benefits of specific cannabinoids to stop COVID-19 from entering human cells. One of the targeted cannabinoids, CBG, or cannabigerol, has been in the spotlight for its potential therapeutic benefits. But what is CBG, and why should you pay attention to this tiny molecule found in cannabis? 

Where CBG Is Found

To understand what CBG is, look no further than the label or COA of your favorite Haygood strain. CBG, much like CBD, is a cannabinoid found in cannabis plants. It’s found in much higher concentrations in younger cannabis plants, most commonly as CBGA, or cannabigerolic acid, which converts to other cannabinoids, including CBD and THC, as the plant grows. 

Strains and cannabis products on the market that boast high CBG rates are limited or pricey, as high amounts of CBG are hard to find naturally in most cannabis plants—though that’s changing. Cannabis farmers and seed breeders who use selective breeding to build higher concentrations of certain cannabinoids have identified and selected strains that have increased amounts of CBG. 

How CBG Works

Much like CBD, CBG is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that has potential to serve as an anti-inflammatory agent and help reduce pain. CBG binds to the body’s endocannabinoid system receptors CB1 and CB2, which may make it more efficient than CBD. Additionally, it may encourage the entourage effect, or when different cannabinoids and terpenes create a more powerful effect, and much like CBD, it may work to counter the psychoactive effects of THC.

With limited availability, research about CBG—and research conducted in humans—is still lacking. Some animal studies evaluating the effectiveness of CBG for its anti-inflammatory properties have been conducted on conditions including inflammatory bowel disease, glaucoma, and Huntington’s Disease. Other studies have examined CBG’s potential for antibacterial properties, blocking certain receptors in cancer cells, and, recently of note, preventing COVID-19 from entering human cells.

CBG has distinctive properties and shows great potential. As research and support for the potential benefits of these different cannabinoids grows, growers are paying attention.
